Shopify Loyalty Program Audit Checklist

Briony Kennedy

A loyalty program should be reviewed like any other commercial system. The question is not how many members joined. It is whether the program changed profitable customer behaviour.

1. Objective

Is the program designed to increase second purchase, frequency, basket size, referrals, data quality or retention? Choose a primary objective.

2. Customer understanding

Can customers explain how they earn, what rewards are worth, when they expire and how to redeem?

3. Reward economics

Calculate reward cost, discount leakage, points liability, redemption, gross margin and contribution after incentives.

4. Incremental behaviour

Compare member behaviour with an appropriate non-member baseline. Naturally loyal customers are more likely to join, so correlation does not prove the program caused the purchase.

5. App and integration costs

Review subscription, usage, email/SMS, POS, support, integrations and internal administration. Use the Shopify app audit checklist.

6. Data and privacy

Document information collected, customer consent, access, sharing, retention and deletion. Confirm privacy notices and provider settings reflect actual practice.

7. Customer experience

Review missing points, difficult redemption, exclusions, expiry complaints, support volume and mobile account access.

8. Brand impact

Does the program reinforce value and recognition, or make every interaction feel transactional?

9. Decision

Keep, simplify, reconfigure, replace or close the program using a documented transition and customer communication plan.

Assess the commercial case with is a loyalty program worth it? and the full customer retention strategy.
