How to Use Live Selling With Shopify

Briony Kennedy

Shopify can support the product, inventory, checkout and customer-data side of live selling. The broadcast experience may happen on a social platform, embedded video, shoppable-video tool or dedicated live-commerce service.

Start with the experience, not the app

Decide whether viewers will watch and buy on the same page, move from a social stream to Shopify, or use a hosted live-shopping interface connected to the store. Each creates different friction and tracking.

Prepare Shopify product data

  • Accurate titles, variants and prices.
  • Clear mobile product pages.
  • Current images and demonstrations.
  • Stock and overselling rules.
  • Shipping, returns and delivery information.
  • Relevant bundles or event collections.

Assess live selling tools

Shopify’s app ecosystem contains live-selling and shoppable-video options. Before installing anything, compare platform compatibility, mobile experience, checkout method, analytics, data access, support, pricing and uninstall behaviour.

Use the Shopify app audit checklist and the supplier questions.

Build the tracking plan

  • Unique links or UTM parameters.
  • Event-specific landing page or collection.
  • Discount codes only where commercially appropriate.
  • Consistent attribution window.
  • Orders, contribution and repeat-purchase cohort.

Test the full customer journey

  1. Open the stream on a mobile device.
  2. Follow the product link.
  3. Select variants.
  4. Add to cart.
  5. Apply the event offer.
  6. Complete a test order where appropriate.
  7. Check confirmation and follow-up.

Protect the live store

Do not install, remove or modify apps immediately before an important event without a rollback plan. Confirm theme impact, data exports and support contacts.

Review after the event

Compare platform analytics with Shopify orders and your contribution-margin calculation. Attribution will rarely be perfect, so use consistent definitions.
