Shopify App Audit Checklist: Cut Costs Safely

Briony Kennedy

Shopify apps can solve real problems quickly. Over time, they can also create duplicated functions, monthly cost, theme code, data access and dependencies nobody remembers.

Do not start by uninstalling

An app may control subscriptions, discounts, customer accounts, fulfilment or hidden theme elements. First document what it does, where it appears and what data or workflow depends on it.

The Shopify app audit checklist

  1. Export the installed-app list and monthly charges.
  2. Name the business owner for each app.
  3. Describe the problem the app solves.
  4. Record active features and storefront locations.
  5. Check usage, adoption and measurable value.
  6. Identify overlapping features.
  7. Review permissions and data accessed.
  8. Document integrations, exports and automations.
  9. Check contract, cancellation and data-retention terms.
  10. Classify keep, configure, replace, test for removal or remove.

Calculate the real cost

Include subscription tiers, usage charges, currency conversion, transaction fees, staff administration, support and the cost of failures. A $30 app that creates weekly manual work may cost more than a $150 app that removes it.

Test removal safely

  1. Confirm no live workflow depends on the app.
  2. Export required data and settings.
  3. Duplicate or back up the theme where appropriate.
  4. Ask whether uninstalling removes theme code.
  5. Test key customer journeys after removal.
  6. Monitor analytics, support and orders.

Questions for every remaining app

  • Would we install this today?
  • What would break without it?
  • Does Shopify now provide the feature natively?
  • Can another retained tool do the same job?
  • What result justifies the annual cost?
