Fractional CEO vs Business Mentor vs Consultant: What Do You Need?
Choose business support by the work you need done and the responsibility you want someone to take. A mentor can help you think through decisions. A consultant can tackle a defined problem. Fractional executive support can involve a more ongoing role in priorities and implementation. The labels overlap, so ask what is actually included.
The impressive title is the easy bit. A useful scope is what you are paying for.
When a business mentor makes sense
You may know your business well but need an experienced sounding board. A mentor can question an assumption, help you compare options and keep the decision connected to your goals.
This can suit a founder who is willing to do the work but wants another perspective before spending money, accepting a proposal or committing to a plan.
When a consultant makes sense
You have a defined problem and need a clear piece of work. That might be reviewing a process, understanding an operational bottleneck or developing a practical plan.
Ask what the deliverable will be, what information is needed and who will implement the recommendations. A report you cannot use is still a report you have paid for.
When fractional CEO support makes sense
You may need continuity across decisions rather than another one-off conversation. Ongoing support can help connect priorities, people, numbers and implementation without recruiting a full-time executive for the same scope of work.
The actual role varies between providers. Agree authority, availability, reporting, decision ownership and responsibilities in writing before starting. Do not assume the title tells you those things.
Where my Pocket CEO work fits
I bring more than 20 years of experience building businesses with my own money, including Adorn Cosmetics. My work combines practical small business advice, mentoring and problem-solving around what you need.
A focused Sounding Board Session can help with one decision, a problem or an idea. Ongoing Pocket CEO support lets me get to know your business and stay across it between sessions, within the scope we agree.
We can look at what you are paying for, how work moves through the business, what customers need and what deserves your attention next. I do not need to turn every problem into a new subscription.
Five questions that make the choice clearer
- What is the problem? Name the decision, delay, risk or opportunity you want help with.
- What would a useful result look like? A clearer decision, a plan, a changed process or ongoing support?
- Who will do the work? Separate advice, implementation and internal ownership.
- How involved do I need someone to be? One session, a defined project or an ongoing relationship?
- How will we know it is useful? Agree a review point and the evidence that matters.
Ask these before you commit
- What is included, and what needs a separate scope?
- How do we communicate between sessions?
- Who makes the final decision?
- How will you work with my team, accountant or agency?
- What information do you need from me?
- What happens if the problem or priorities change?
Start with the work, not the label
If you are not sure which service fits, describe what is happening in your business. You do not need to diagnose the whole thing before getting in touch.
